Stories of Grace: A Decade of Worshippers

Our hearts were made to worship. It’s natural for us to treasure something in the depths of our souls, its glimmer drawing our gaze and actions toward it. For some, this treasure is money. For others, it’s power and control. And for many it’s ourselves and a comfortable life. We spend so much of our time and effort worshipping and seeking after the things of this world.

Though our hearts are clearly prone to wander, Jesus is intended to be the perfect focus for our worship. The more we find our joy in Him, the more we grow to walk in His ways, to see with His eyes.

Worship is engrained in our identity as Karis Church. We are a family of worshippers. We seek to be a people who delight in Jesus for His glory. As a church, this can take many forms, but one of the ways we worship is by gathering together on Sundays. We sing melodies that nudge our hearts towards God and remind us of the grace He has lavished upon us. We greet each other in fellowship and take the Lord’s Supper together. We listen to messages carefully crafted to instruct us in our calling as Christ-followers.

Over the past ten years, we’ve come together to worship in all kinds of places. Our gatherings have seen both the intimacy of the Larson’s living room and the grandeur of the Missouri Theatre. We’ve met at the Tiger Hotel for two different seasons. We’ve convened after our friends at Calvary Baptist Church and at The Bridge downtown. We’ve had gatherings in the AM, in the PM, and even at the intentionally vague 11ish.

And now, by His grace alone, we gather at Karis Westside, a building that was selflessly passed on to us by the folks of Bethany Baptist Church. Over a particularly hot and sweaty summer, we made this building our own, from the cozy coffee area downstairs to the woodland creatures that welcome in our Karis Kids.

But a building doesn’t beget our worship, our church, our family in Christ. It’s just one of the places where we worship. As we collectively rejoice in the hope of the gospel, our worship overflows into our living rooms, our workplaces and the streets of our city.

When we find our common source of delight in Jesus, He draws us together in Him. And as we turn our hearts toward God, we glorify Him and find everlasting joy.
