Think back to your school days and remember the smell of freshly sharpened pencils and brand new pink erasers. There's some excitement to collecting what you need to start a new school year, but buying school supplies can become expensive and challenging to some families. That's why both our Columbia and Jefferson City campuses will be helping put new school supplies in the hands of children this Saturday, August 6, 2016.
In Jefferson City, we will serve the city at a Back to School Fair held at South Elementary School. This event helps to provide children from low-income homes with the supplies they need for school. In addition to school supplies, there will be other services offered to families, such as haircuts and meal vouchers.
In Columbia, we’ll be hosting our own event, Kamp Karis, a fun-filled day for children from the neighborhoods around our building, from Kindergarten through 6th grade. In addition to the school supplies drive, they will enjoy outdoor games and other activities, lunch, and a gospel presentation.
Both events give us practical and Christ-centered opportunities to love our neighborhoods, taking the gospel on mission to the people around us with the help of pencils and erasers.
If you would like to volunteer with either event, we can still use your help. Please contact us and let us know which city you wish to serve in.
This summer, Jake Gonzales, a former Karis intern, and my former assistant, almost died from a rare heart infection. However, the Lord spared him. He's now doing much better while he awaits a heart transplant. Check out this powerful testimony Jake shared Sunday in Karis Church. We are so thankful the Lord heard our prayers.
We'll host another Central Missouri Acts 29 Luncheon on February 17th at noon at the Shakespeare's Pizza downtown . Karis Church elder Derek Zimmermann will be teaching on "Biblical Counseling in the Church." Derek has led up Karis's Redemption Groups and will have some helpful words to share on the topic. This gathering is geared toward pastors, planters, and church leaders, but everyone is welcome. RSVP to Jake Gonzales if you can. Plan to buy some pizza and a drink.
Monday and Tuesday, Rob and I, along with three of our interns (Josh Pugsley, Jake Gonzales, and Drew Glosson) and two leaders of our Jeff City team (Josh Zeichik and Tony Boes) attended the first “For the Church” conference at Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City. Entitled “Ready,” it featured Darrin Patrick, Alex Himaya, Ronnie Floyd, and Jared Wilson as speakers. We had a great time together. I love having the opportunity to hear my brother, Darrin, anytime I can. I really appreciate the heart of Jared Wilson. The other speakers, including new President Jason Allen (went to Southern with the guy), also had some helpful things to say. Did you know Karis Church has a new partnership with Midwestern Seminary through its Midwestern Training Network? Now interns and members of Karis can get a Master of Arts degree from MBTS while remaining in Columbia. We’re really excited about this. Contact Rob for more information.
